Security screws are simply screws that have been specially made with a small key that secures them. The security screw can either be counterbalanced or balanced. The counterbalance is when two screws are lined up so that they counterbalance each other. The balanced type is more common because one screw is already in place, while the counterbalance can only secure one screw. This can make tightening the screws quite difficult and it’s very easy for them to be pulled out or loosened. The key feature that set security screws apart, and what makes them more secure, is the locking drive.
The locking drive allows a certain amount of rotation to occur while the screw spins around, locking the material the screw is attached to into place. This is similar to a cam lever, which only rotates one degree out of the way in order to allow access to a fastener. Since security screw are a different shape than most other screws, there are specific tools that can be used to change the shape of the head of the fastener, allowing access by a different key or by a different tool. This is called a keyless fastener and can be created by taking the topmost prong off of one of the fasteners on a regular screw.
To use this type of fastener, you must remove the bolt that holds the lock to the frame. If you’ve already taken the lock out, the only thing left to take out is the tension cable that is dangle between the spring and the spindle. Take care not to damage the lock, as this will allow you to easily remove the spindle if needed. Once the tension cable is removed, unscrew the two screws that are on the top end of the spindle, making sure to keep them tight to avoid damaging them with the wrench. Carefully slide the spindle off the end of the bolt, but keep in mind that the slot is a tight fit, and it is important to have some measure of room around the opening to prevent inadvertent nicks on the bolt.
The next step is to choose the appropriate security fastener. Since these bolts tend to be quite a distance from the hole in the wall, it is best to choose ones with the least amount of weight that you would have to carry. There is a specific tool for each type of bolt, so check the documentation carefully for what type of security fastener you need. It is possible to drill through a fiberglass window, for example, but this is not very practical. You will also need a wrench for these types of fasteners, so you may want to consider getting one that can also be used for other types of bolts as well.
Once you have the security screw in place, you will want to start using it to hold the frame in place. To do this, you must set the tool so that it faces upward. Then, you should use both hands to grasp both sides of the frame and turn it in an anticlockwise direction. This will help prevent the screws from loosening as they begin to spin. This can also help prevent your frame from becoming damaged, as the frame will be held in place and won’t be pulled out of the wall by its own weight. With the frame in place, you can then pull on the side of the security bit set to tighten it down.
When installing screws that are larger than the ones already installed in the wall, it is possible to buy a longer security fastener or you can use long screws. Be sure to follow all instructions carefully for proper installation. You may find that you need to use a level to get the screws seated properly, and then you should tap into the wall to make sure that you have a secure install. Installing screws into a wooden wall is easier when the wood is already dry, but if the wood does not yet have water on it, you should install it after having water sprayed onto it. It is usually best to install screws in drywall where it can be torn down later, unless you want to move the walls or repaint them.
